Trithemis arteriosa

The Red-veined Dropwing is an attractive species of dragonfly that can be found in suitable habitat over most of South Africa. In fact they are common all the way up to the Mediterranean region.

The name "dropwing" comes from their habit of sitting with their wings facing forwards and lowered.

Only males have the bright red colouration. Females and younger males are yellow/orange.

The Red-veined Dropwing can be found near almost any body of water.
