The Wildebeest's guide to South Africa

Welverdiend

Afrikaans name: Welverdiend

Welverdiend, Northern Cape, is situated in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (which is part of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park).

This small settlement is a border post between South Africa and Namibia. It is normally open between 08h00 and 16h30 and is only for tourist traffic. Commercial vehicles cannot use this crossing point, presumably because the South African side is located in a game reserve.

The town is the neighbour to Mata Mata rest camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is located on the normally dry Auob River. To reach it from Twee Rivieren you follow the R360 through the national park.

The Namibian side of the border is also a sparsely populated area. The road becomes the C15 and heads towards the village of Twee Rivier where the Olifants River joins the Auob River. When travelling in this area ensure that you have sufficient supplies of fuel and water as distances are long and amenities are few.
